Ken J Berger, Esq., MD, JD 

Secretary General of the World Association for Medical Law and Program Chair

Ken J. Berger is the Secretary General of the World Association and sits on its Executive Committee.

He is a graduate of the University of Toronto Medical School and Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto MD JD.

He attended McGill University for Post Graduate Education.  He is a member of the United States Supreme Court Bar, the New York State Bar, the Law Society of Ontario and the College of Physician and Surgeons of Ontario.

He teaches at the Faculty of Law, Institute of Health Policy Management and Evaluation, and Faculty of Medicine all at the University of Toronto where he holds faculty appointments.  He is principal at Medicallegaladvocates.com, which is a leading Health Law litigation boutique serving the interests of physicians, nurses, allied health, patients, and clients with diverse legal issues including landmark Constitutional cases and serves as an active academic Hospitalist serving his patients and his Division, where he works to develop best practices in both medicine and law.  He is Program Chair of the 26th World Congress on Medical Law and a sought after lawyer, physician, health law expert and speaker.

Olivia Hannigan, LLB

Associate

Ms. Hannigan is an associate at Berger Law Firm and the Law Offices of Ken J. Berger. Her areas of focus is Health Law including mental health and capacity law and criminal law.
 

She received her LL.B. from Queen Mary University of London in the United Kingdom before returning back to her hometown of Toronto to pursue legal practice. Prior to law school, Olivia obtained her Bachelor of Arts and Science (Honours) from Queen’s University, where she was heavily involved in student life and serving the community.

She appears regularly before the Consent and Capacity Board and the Ontario Court of Justice, and she has appeared before the Superior Court of Justice. She is dedicated to serving her clients with a compassionate, thoughtful and results-based approach.

Melissa Serpe, LLB

Student-at-Law

Ms. Serpe is currently a student-at-law at Berger Law Firm and Law Offices of Ken J. Berger, Esq., MD, JD. where she has gained valuable insight into Healthcare law. She received her LL.B from Leeds University in the United Kingdom where she participated in mooting and negotiating competitions. Additionally, Ms. Serpe was a Student-Staff Forum Representative where she was a voice for her peers and international students. After completing her LL.B Ms. Serpe came back to Canada and obtained her LL.M from Osgoode Hall Law School. 
 

Prior to receiving her LL.B, Ms. Serpe completed her undergraduate degree at Queen’s University where she was involved in a wide range of extracurricular activities including Queen’s Pre-Law Society.
